Cancer And HGH

In November 2003, Hanneke Hops was profiled in The Chronicle. This 56-year-old woman claimed that her daily injections of HGH had her feeling happier, stronger, and healthier. Hops had been an athlete all her life and she always looks forward to riding horses, running marathons, and flying planes. Thanks to a boost from the HGH injection, which was as a genetically engineered drug that had at no time been approved as a medicine for anti aging.

The 4 stages of Breast Cancer

In an interview Hanneke Hops said, "I don't mind dying, but I mind growing old and suffering. ... If we are not healthy, how can we accomplish our goals in life?" In January, 2 months after her story appeared in The Chronicle, Hops underwent testing, which found her liver covered with tumors. In February she was dead. While there was no link made to her use of HGH and her sudden decline in health, but her family and friends are suspicious to this day that somehow there was a link between her HGH use and her cancer.

"I believe it accelerated a cancer she must have had already," said her son, Erick Schenkhuizen, a San Diego financial adviser. "If she hadn't taken the hormones, she could still be alive today."

Since the time that Hops died, America's love with anti-aging medicine has increased significantly. The enegenics Medical Institute is the Las Vegas clinic that prescribed HGH injections to Hops. This clinic is still in business today.

"There's a huge demand for this," said Dr. Alan Mintz, the 68-year-old entrepreneurial radiologist who founded Cenegenics. "We have 12,000 patients. We're opening up in Charleston, and Boca Raton."

When contacted Mintz was not aware of Hops’ death and said that his clinic was not involved in the clinical care of patients; however, a cancer screen is a routine part of the medical work-up given to patients before they start on hormone therapy (HGH Injections). Hops began her treatments in August 2003. Mintz was quick to point out that there wasn’t a single article that directly linked HGH to cancer. But by the time Hops died, she had numerous questions about the effect the HGH might have had on her.

Warning Published by the Journal of the American Medical Association

Epidemiologist Jay Olshansky and colleagues, from The Journal of the American Medical Association, University of Chicago, warned that "prescribing and administering growth hormone has become a routine intervention in an industry that is variably called 'anti aging,' 'regenerative,' 'longevity' or 'age management' medicine. An increased cancer risk is a concern with long-term use of HGH, and higher levels of insulin-like growth factor.”

Human growth hormone injections have also been linked to tissue swelling, carpel tunnel syndrome, and diabetes.

Dr. Shlomo Melmed, who is the president of the International Society of Endocrinologists, stated, “prescribing HGH to adults for any condition other than AIDS-related wasting or rare pituitary disorders is "illegal, and inappropriate medically."

Melmed says that at a cost that’s around $10,000 a year, taking HGH injections is a waste of medical resources. There is no proof that it will slow aging and it may not be safe, and it can add to the economic burden of the health care system.

Studies Link HGH to Cancer

There have been a number of studies linking HGH use to cancer. Although each of these studies stresses that there is a need for further larger studies to take place in order to more clearly see what the pattern is. According to Harvard studies and other studies, there is a link between HGH injections and breast, prostate and colon cancer.

"If further studies confirm these findings, blood levels of the growth factor and its binding protein might be used to identify people at the highest risk for these cancers and, therefore, who might benefit most from lifestyle changes and other means of prevention," says Jing Ma, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Researchers recently announced the results of a six-year study that involved 32,826 nurses. The ones with the highest levels of IGF-1 were two and half times more likely to develop colon cancer. The study also found that when there were high levels of IGFBP-3 had the opposite effect. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19810099)

Channing Laboratory team concluded that premenopausal women with high IGF-1 levels have more than double the relative risk of breast cancer. Younger women are at greatest risk. This team was led by Susan Hankinson, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the School of Public Health and an assistant professor of medicine at the Medical School. All of these studies used blood samples that were collected 32,826 nurses and 14,916 physicians between 1982 and 1990, none of which had cancer at the time.

Another study involved 27 women, between the ages of 62 to 82 years old, who took HGH, resulting in a decrease in fat and it protected against bone loss. As a result, there was a release of media reports that suggested science had discovered how to stall, or reverse, signs of aging.

Two studies showed that men with above normal levels of IGF-1 had an increased risk for cancer. The levels of IGF-1 reflect the amount of HGH in the body. In these 2 studies, Dr. Michael Anchors, a physician and biochemist at Harvard says that we are aware that IGF-1 will decrease with age and high levels of IGF-1 are linked to prostate cancer, so it would make sense that the risk of developing prostate cancer would decrease with age. Yet, that’s not the case. Five studies on IGF-1 could not find a link between IGF-1 and prostate cancer, so that would indicate that HGH injections would increase the risk of prostate cancer.

Another study showed an increase in the incidence of leukemia in Japanese children that were treated with synthetic HGH injections. The problem with this study was that children already diagnosed with leukemia prior to their HGH therapy were included in the study. After removing these children from the study, there was no longer an increase in the incidence of cancer.

In addition, in human growth hormone deficient children who had their tumors irradiated, HGH injection therapy didn’t increase the rate of tumor recurrence.

Pharmacia UpJohn a pharmaceutical company states that in the culture tests they have conducted no evidence of cancer cell mutation has occurred, which is the first step of cancer development.

Could HGH Help Prevent Cancer?

Some researchers believe restoring HGH levels protects the body and it may prevent cancer.

Dr. Edmund Chein and Dr. L. Cass Terry did a study that involved 800 test subjects. Their test subjects were treated with synthetic HGH injection therapy, yet there were no reported cases of cancer. In addition, there haven’t been any reports of cancer from any of the patients treated at their clinic.

There have been some speculations that because HGH therapy helps normal cells rapidly divide; this could mean it might cause cancer cells to rapidly divide. Dr. Terry thinks that in view of the fact that their studies involved 800 people 40 years of age or older, some of these individuals should have developed cancer based on the normal rate of cancer occurring in 40+ years of age. Since not one of the 800 patients developed cancer, there is speculation that HGH might reduce the likelihood of developing cancer.

In addition, the levels of PSA, a marker of prostate problems including cancer, didn’t go up among Dr. Terry & Dr. Chein's male patients. One case study showed that HGH injection therapy actually appeared to reverse previously diagnosed prostate cancer in one patient, who originally had a PSA level in the 50.0 to 60.0 range.

Dr. Chein had treated this patient with HGH injections, DHEA and melatonin, which resulted in his PSA levels dropping into the 5.0 to 7.0 range. Dr. Terry admitted he was not aware of the cause for the apparent remission; however, Dr. Chein speculates that the HGH stimulated the immune system, and this resulted in naturally killing the cancer cells. In animal studies there is tons of data showing that HGH rejuvenates the immune system, including the cells that recognize the cancer cells and then fight them.

Conclusion

While there is more science that would indicate that HGH injections could cause cancer, but because there is science that indicates it may reduce the risk of cancer, it is clear that more research is necessary to
