Major League Baseball Players Face Charges for HGH Use in Sports

Just over one year ago today Major League Baseball the Biogenesis scandal occurred that lead to over a dozen suspensions, which in turn placed the focus on embattled slugger Alex Rodriguez. Of course HGH use in sports isn't limited to baseball.  The Federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents carried out an early Tuesday morning roundup that linked Tony Bosch (former clinic founder), and others tied to his operation.

Shortly after 6 am ET, the DEA agents began driving up to the DEA regional office on the outskirts of Fort Lauderdale with the handcuffed suspects. Tony Bosch along with his lawyer arrived at the DEA office to voluntarily surrender. Many of Bosh’s associates linked to the anti-aging/wellness business were arrested at their homes in the early morning hours and then brought in to be processed.

Federal sources said 50 year old Bosch reached a deal to plead guilty to conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids and The U.S. Attorney's office scheduled a news conference for later that day in Miami to explain the charges.

Sources said that MLB players and pro athletes from other sport were actually not the FED’s focus during the investigation; instead, authorities were concerned with focusing on possible illegal activities that Bosch and associates were involved in.

Bosch, is a biochemist, and he was at the head of the largest performance-enhancing drug scandal to ever hit American sports. To date, around 20 professional players that are linked to his clinic were suspended by MLB after they either tested positive for HGH use or their doping regimens were uncovered in clinic records. Some of these are very famous baseball players like A-Rod, Melky Cabrera, Ryan Braun, Bartolo Colon and Nelson Cruz.

There were at least 25 players, name in clinic documents either by their nick name or real name. However, the MLB did not have adequate evidence to bring suspensions against all of them. Sources have said that the number of MLB players who had directly dealt with Bosch over the years would be much higher than what was found in the clinic documents.

Records showed that Bosch also regularly serviced professional athletes from other sports along with South Florida business-types, entertainers and many others – Bosh prescribed regimens of human growth hormone and testosterone.

Ironically, the provider to these athletes, Bosch, later would become the main witness in the case the MLB built against Rodriguez, who did appeal his suspension. Baseball officials agreed to drop a civil lawsuit against Bosch and they promised to put in a good word if he faced criminal charges and in return Bosch would allow access to his texts, emails and other evidence that could be used against A-Rod (Rodriguez) and other players.

The agreement was reached just a couple months (June 2013) before a federal grand jury in Miami that was slated to hear evidence against Bosch and his wellness clinic. Patrick Sullivan and Sharad Motiania, Assistant U.S. Attorneys, led the prosecution and the investigation was coordinated by the DEA. Porter Fischer, was a former patient/client who was the marketing director of Biogenesis for a short period. He appeared before the grand jury turning over important clinic documents, how the clinic obtained/administered HGH injections, steroids, testosterone and other drugs, and the source.

In July 2013, "Outside the Lines" reported that sources said Bosch had provided teens with PEDs. The allegation was also supported by clinic documents obtained by "Outside the Lines."

Clinic records showed the names of more than 15 high school/college athletes who were patients of Bosch and who had received PEDs. Both the attorneys and parents of a number of these players denied involvement with Bosch and said their teenager did not take any banned substances.

At least one athlete, through his lawyer, did confirm the PED regimen prescribed for his client. According to the client’s lawyer the aspiring college baseball player, along with his father, visited Bosch hoping that the HGH he was prescribed would help him grow taller as he was considered very short at about 5-foot-6.

"(Bosch) said if you take this concoction or whatever -- it was pills and some small HGH stuff ... it was geared toward extending his growth spurt," the attorney told "Outside the Lines" "From 5-7 to 5-10 is a big difference when it comes to the colleges."

According to the young athletes lawyer, Bosch also recommended testosterone to the teenager's father.

A former employee stated, “I know (he) the father used to come in and pick up medicines for the kids," the former employee said. "I don't know their names. I just know because the nurse mentioned to me that the father picks up HGH for the kids. For the sons. She didn't say that they were minors or anything."

Bosch’s relationships with players dates back more than a decade to other clinics he was involved with. He attended parties where players hung out and had tickets to big league games to ensure he could reach his targeted clients – professional baseball players.

Bosch was first in the news back in 2009 when Manny Ramirez was slapped with his first of two drug suspensions by the MLB. ESPN reported at that time about the role of Bosch with Ramirez who either personally wrote the prescription for a banned substance or had his 71 year old father do so.

The elder Bosch was said to have prescribed human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) – this is a fertility drug that athletes commonly used to boost their natural testosterone levels after the come off a steroid cycle.

The DEA investigators did into the matter, but according to information provided to "Outside the Lines" that the agency never actually opened a case.

Many associates told "Outside the Lines" that Bosch told people he was a medical doctor. On a former venture that did not get off the ground, with the state corporate filings Bosch is listed as "Dr. Bosch."

The Biogenesis office was on the 1st floor of the Gables Waterway Executive Center, three story stucco building that housed a number of medical and professional offices. It was located just across from the streets of the University of Miami campus as well as easily visible from the Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Stadium.

Today, this story is once again surfacing and making news all over again, in thanks, largely as a result of the concerns of use with HGH injections still occurring within professional and amateur sports. It seems even with the bans and the charges and the humiliation associated with the use of HGH injections many athletes still feel it’s worth the risk. This is especially true with injuries. HGH injections help improve and speed up recovery.

A better alternative might be for athletes to consider the use of an HGH supplement such as Genf20 Plus. This is an over the counter legal supplement that contains no HGH. It is made up of a number of natural ingredients and amino acids that help the body increase production of its own HGH. A win-win option. Safe and legal. NB: Before starting a regimen of HGH supplements you may want to make sure just to be safe that it is still acceptable to use them!
