HGH and Testosterone in the Management of Back Pain

Pain, in whatever form, has the potential of having significant negative impact on well-being. Back pain can be especially uncomfortable and is capable of making a person's life miserable. People usually resort to medications, surgeries and other types of interventions for dealing with back pain, but most are oblivious that growth hormone and testosterone could also be helpful in this regard. This article gives an insight into how these important hormones may be beneficial for back pain management.

Back Pain Facts

Back pain is usually divided into different types based on area of the spine affected. They include neck pain, upper back pain and lower back pain. It could be a constant or intermittent occurrence. Of the different types of back pain, acute lower back pain is the most common, ranking among the most common reasons people visit clinics and hospitals in the United states. From this background, it is easy to understand why many people seem to be on an endless search to find the perfect painkiller. About 50 percent of working adults experience back pain each year and around 90 percent of all adults are estimated to experience back pain at some point in life.

It is somewhat difficult to deal with this pain due to the complex nature of the spine, which is a network of nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints all of which are capable of causing pain. With some nerves travelling to different parts of the body, the pain can easily spread causing a person to feel fatigued.

HGH and Testosterone for Back Pain

It has been observed that most people suffering from back pain have low levels of human growth hormone. HGH deficiency can lead to chronic degeneration of connective tissues resulting in back problems. The hormone promotes fast healing and is used for the treatment of connective tissue and joint problems. It binds to and activates androgen receptors on target tissue cells, with this stimulating multiplication and division of cartilage chondrocytes thereby helping to relieve back pain. HGH assists in raising the levels of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1)in the blood. Low levels of IGF-1 have been observed in people with back pain issues.

Although often considered a sexual hormone, testosterone offers diverse benefits to the body. It also helps with androgenic healing, tissue growth, muscle and bone mass maintenance, and promotes exercise tolerance. Deficiency of this hormone has also been observed in patients with chronic pain issues. Sufficient levels of biologic testosterone is advised for effective pain control, especially as a result of the fact that it has a role to play in the activity of endogenous opioids. Inadequate amount leads to poor pain control as well as lack of energy, sleep problems, poor motivation and depression. Testosterone suppresses sensation of pain.

Recombinant human growth hormone and/or testosterone have been used for the management of back pain issues in numerous patients. In an individual study in 2000, the IGF-1 and testosterone levels in a patient were tested and the results revealed low levels. The individual was then placed on HGH secretagogues and vitamins, which led to the doubling of the IGF-1 level. There was a reduction in pain sensation, but some discomfort lingered. Introduction of testosterone significantly drove down the extent of pain further. After 10 weeks of therapy, the severe back pain was eliminated while mood and overall feeling of wellness were enhanced.

Research-based Evidence

AA study published in the Journal of Pain Research in June 2015 aimed to find out the usefulness and safety of recombinant HGH and testosterone injections for the management of chronic lower back pain. A total of 60 patients were recruited, of which 39 completed every aspect of the study. The injections were given to these patients, who also had physical and/or chiropractic therapy, and the outcomes were evaluated 12 months from when the injections were first given. Based on study results, the researchers conclude that the use of recombinant growth hormone and testosterone appears to be useful and safe for patients with chronic nonradicular lower back pain.

In a different study, the results of which were presented at the 95th Annual Meeting of The Endocrine Society, testosterone therapy was shown to be valuable for decreasing pain perception in males with low testosterone levels. A total of 84 men with opioid-induced testosterone deficiency and aged between 16 and 64 were recruited for the study. Of the total, 65 took part for the entire 14-week duration. The group that was administered testosterone gel experienced significant improvement in pain perception and tolerance compared to those in the placebo group.

Precautions When Taking HGH Injections

IIf you intend using biosynthetic growth hormone and testosterone injections for the treatment of back pain, it is advised that you proceed with caution. Some users have complained about having lower back pain and cramps after using HGH. However, it has been observed that such complaints arise from excessive doses of the hormone. Testosterone overdose is also dangerous and could lead to diverse side effects such as increased risk of blood clots, developing prostate cancer and suffering heart attack and stroke. In essence, HGH and testosterone injections need to be taken in moderation.

Combined use of recombinant HGH and testosterone injections may be useful for the management of back pain, although large-scale studies are still needed to further confirm effectiveness. Make sure you discuss with your doctor before deciding on therapy.
