HGH Gut – Why Bodybuilders Look Pregnant
If you follow professional bodybuilding at all, you may have noticed that many bodybuilders look pregnant. They have distended guts otherwise called big stomachs. Of course, this doesn’t affect all of the bodybuilders, but it is affecting a high enough percentage that it’s time to talk about it. Why are today’s bodybuilders walking around looking pregnant, when if you look back into the past, this never seemed to be a problem? What’s different? So common has this become that it is a concern within the bodybuilding community. There are a number of reasons why a bodybuilder could develop this large gut and we’re going to look at them.
HGH or human growth hormone injections are commonly used in the bodybuilding community. Unlike steroids, HGH injections don’t increase one’s protein synthesis, which leads to muscle building, instead HGH increases cell division, which causes muscles to expand. However, it also causes organs and bones to expand.
- The main effects of HGH include:
- An increase in protein synthesis
- An increase in calcium retention, which increases bone mineralization
- An increase in muscle mass
- It stimulate the growth of all organs except for the brain
- It promotes lipolysis
- It reduced glucose uptake in the liver
- It promotes gluconeogenesis
- It plays a role in homeostasis
- It stimulates the immune system
- It maintains pancreatic islet function
- It increases deiodination of T3 to T4
Right now HGH injections seem to be the most powerful performance enhancing substance being used, but make no mistake, it comes with a price. In addition to the many negative side effects associated with HGH injections, have also lead to what’s called GH Gut.
When the body has an excess amount of HGH it can cause organs to grow extremely large, which can lead to serious conditions like diabetes, atherosclerosis, hypertension and even organ failure. When there are extremely high levels of HGH in the body it can cause one’s bones to grow rapidly increasing the chance of physical injury and of course HGH gut.
So why did Lou Ferrigno or Arnold Schwarzenegger not develop HGH gut. Why did they never look pregnant? Because back then they did not have HGH. These guys used steroids but they didn’t have access to HGH or IGF-1.
Since the introduction of HGH, IGF-1, and insulin in the bodybuilding world, which is driven by the ‘more is better’ ideology, many of the unwanted side effects have become common place. Over use or abuse of HGH can cause:
- Abnormal growth of the feet and hands, and sometimes the face
- Growth of organs
- Abdomen growth known as HGH gut. It’s common to see a bodybuilder have a distended stomach with a colon that’s as large as a boa constrictor.
- High blood pressure, diabetes, vascular disease
Every bodybuilding program will include the main compound exercises such as bench-press, squats and deadlift. Most bodybuilders use their abdomen muscles to stabilize their body when they are doing squats or deadlifts. The belly muscles are pushed outwards to stabilize the core. If you are a powerlifter this is all good, but for a bodybuilder it’s a big “No.” One needs to focus on pulling the abdominal muscles while doing the lift.
Eating Huge Amounts of Food
A common complaint among bodybuilders is that they train lots, but hit a plateau when it comes to their weight. A common response is to instruct them to eat more because they are in their bulking phase. Professionals like Ronnie Coleman or Jay Cutler will eat upwards of 10 meals a day of protein and carbs. Other experts say that it is this eating that leads to the protruding abdomen where bodybuilders look like they are pregnant.
Between the muscles being forced outwards, bloating from gluten intolerance, overuse of HGH, and perhaps food allergies, it’s no wonder that protruding abdomen becomes a problem.
Body structure isn’t something you have control over – you are born with your body structure. Bodybuilders with a shorter torso tend to have more distension than those with a longer torso. Ronnie Coleman is a good example of a short torso and a big gut.
The Japanese Study
A Japanese study mentioned consisted of 2-parts (Miyauchi et al, 2013). Part 1 was an observational study that looked at freshman and senior football players and Part 2 is an intervention study. In Part 1, the researchers looked at differences in body composition between the freshman and senior football players.
They reported that as a result of a protocol that involved intense bulking along with resistance training regimens, the average senior football players weighed 17 kg more than the freshmen did. This was broken down into 11-12 kg of lean mass and 5-6 kg of fat mass (“serious bulking, bra!”). The study also reported that the weights of the kidneys, liver, and heart increased significantly. It is interesting that these increases are relatively proportional to the increases that were seen in muscle and fat mass.
Part 2 of the study, tried to reproduce this change using an intervention study, which took freshman players and put them on a control bulking and training protocol over a period of a year, in an effort of reproducing these changes. Interestingly, they got almost the same results as those obtained during the observational study.
The changes were a little smaller than the differences reported in the observational study. However, this is likely caused by the fact that the intervention study was with only one year of training, compared to the observational study, which was based on the seniors that had been bulking and training for 2 to 3 years so they had more time to grow.
On can’t exclude the possibility that drugs were involved in the study’s hypertrophy and that the results were actually caused by anabolic drugs, but the gain of lean body mass in relation to the gain in fat mass was not enough to conclude anabolic drugs were used. The conclusion was that HGH was the drug used.
Conclusion in the Relationship of HGH to Large Gut
The huge guts seen in bodybuilders and the increase in organ weight in the animal studies with testosterone and GH were caused directly by both testosterone and GH. The main reason for the organ growth is secondary to the bulking up and the use of anabolic hormones. In competitive bodybuilding, the body grows bigger, as do the organs.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was 185 cm and 110 kg in competition shape. Compare that to the top five Mr. O contenders, who are 5 to 10 cm shorter and 15 to 25 kg heavier. They are also leaner and drier. These massive bodies need massive organs. The organs grow and the intestines weight more, but the amount of space available in the abdomen never changes. In fact the trunk and pelvis musculature decreases and becomes thicker, which means there is less space for the organs and intestines that are growing. This doesn’t explain all of the guts in modern bodybuilding, but it does help to make things clearer.
HGH injection over use in combination with all of the other factors leaves bodybuilders looking pregnant when they are in their competing forms.
