HGH Benefits - What Are They?

HGH or human growth hormone creates a great deal of controversy, mostly because it is misunderstood. Let's look at the science behind what is HGH, why we need it and how it can benefit us. Everywhere you turn there are real life stories from people that aren’t body builders or athletes – normal people – showing that growth hormone replacement therapy can have very dramatic HGH benefits on the body by increasing muscle mass, regaining youthfulness, strengthening the immune system, sharpening up memory and the ability to learn, lowering blood pressure, and on it goes. Are these benefits of HGH that are claimed real or fiction?

The New England Journal of Medicine published a clinical study done by Doctor Rudman on HGH that shocked people around the world (July 5, 1990). HGH or human growth hormone is a substance that the pituitary gland produces naturally. The  Rudman’s clinical study showed that increasing HGH levels in older men helped them feel and look years younger. In the Rudman double blind clinical HGH study Synthetic HGH was given to 12 men, between the ages of 61 - 81 who at the end of the study developed sleeker, leaner, more youthful bodies.

After only six months of receiving the HGH treatment, the men gained an average of 8.8% lean body mass, and lost an average of 14.4% fat mass. The men’s skin thickened by 7.1%, the bone density of their lumbar spines increased by 1.6%, their livers grew by 19%, and their spleens by 17%. With words that are seldom spoken in conservative medical journals, "The HGH benefits of six months of human growth hormone on lean body mass and adipose-tissue mass were equivalent in magnitude to the changes incurred during 10 to 20 years of aging."

Rudman's study was the beginning of thousands of other studies that clearly documented human growth hormone therapy had benefits in HGH-deficient adults.  A five-year, multimillion-dollar study is being funded by the National Institute on Aging to find out what possible HGH benefits there are. It is using nine medical centers to test whether the use of HGH and nutrition-related factors can slow or even reverse aging. However, huge numbers of people from around world aren’t waiting to see the results and are already using HGH in hopes of seeing their more youthful side once again.

In addition, growth hormone received the Food and Drug Administration's imprimatur in 1996 for use in adults with HGH deficiency due to pituitary or hypothalamic disease, injury, surgery or radiation therapy. This now allows doctors to prescribe human growth hormone as an anti-aging treatment for adults with low levels of IGF-1, which indicates a failure of the pituitary gland to produce adequate amounts of HGH.

The most abundant hormone in the pituitary gland is the growth hormone. Pituitary cells are called somatotrophs, which is where the growth hormone is secreted. In fact, 50% of the pituitary gland cells are somatotrophs. As we age, the production of these cells significantly decreases and we begin to show the signs of aging.

HGH Benefits Studies

Dr. Bengt Ake Bengtsson

Dr. Bengt-Ake Bengtsson, and his colleagues at Salgrenska Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, studied 333 pituitary insufficient patients between 1956 and 1987. Some patients were given pituitary-hormone replacement therapy and other patients were given thyroid hormones, sex hormones and cortisone, but no growth hormone. The growth hormone deficient patients died at twice the expected rate with 107 deaths compared to 57 in the overall population, matched for age and sex. The main cause of death was cardiovascular disease.

Three Pioneering HGH Studies

Three pioneering studies in England, Sweden and Denmark found that 4-6 months of growth hormone replacement in adults who had low GH levels that was due to pituitary insufficiency had beneficial effects on cardiac function, body composition, renal function, exercise capacity and quality of life. Amongst the HGH benefits the study showed was that when a person had 12-18 months of HGH therapy there was an increase in bone density.

There were some striking findings related to one’s quality of life. Prior to the treatment, many of the patients said they were struggling with low self-esteem, depression and anxiety. After a short time on HGH therapy, the difference was astounding.

"We called it the Lazarus effect," he says. “For some patients it was like waking up and getting a kick start to enjoy life again and this was just in a few weeks. Psychologist Dr. Lena Wiren evaluated the patients and she said, "Nobody wants to stop treatment."Sometimes, it is not even the patient who notices the difference that HGH benefits are making. Rather it is their wives or children or friends at work."

L. Cass Terry, M.D., Ph.D. Preliminary Study

L. Cass Terry, M.D., Ph.D., has finished a preliminary study of patients treated with the high frequency, low-dose method. This is about 25 to 50% less HGH than Rudman used on a weekly dosage, whose patients had experienced some side effects. The HF-LD regimen used about 0.3 to 0.7 IU of GH taken twice two times a day.

The researchers say it was tolerated well and they have seen no adverse side effects. During this same period, the average somatomedin C levels were increased by 61%, from a mean of 238.8 to 384.5. Self-assessment questionnaires from 202 patients, reported muscle-mass gain, body-fat loss, greater strength, energy levels, exercise tolerance and improved quality of life. Many also reported greater skin thickness and better skin texture.

The Benefits of HGH Use

HGH therapy may be effective in the prevention or treatment of a number of common diseases/conditions related to aging. In fact, research is indicating that hormone replacement, which includes HGH replacement, could be one of the most effective ways to maintain one’s health and vigor as we age including those people who are in their 80s and 90s. Here are some of the areas in which the human growth hormone has shown considerable benefit:

  • Cardiac function - HGH therapy improves cardiac function and protects one from cardiovascular disease in numerous ways. It reduces body fat, especially abdominal fat, which is linked to an increased risk of heart attack. It improves good cholesterol and lowers bad cholesterol, and it can reduce diastolic blood pressure by approx. 10 percent with no effect on systolic pressure.
  • Youthful Skin - One of the most noticeable HGH benefits is the one it has on the skin. After only couple of months several men who were given HGH in the Rudman double blind clinical study noticed a significant thickening of their skins and a dramatic smoothing of fine and deep wrinkles. Basically these men that were in their sixties at the time of the clinical study started to look much younger than their age.
  • Immune function -In 1985, Dr. Keith Kelley, a research immunologist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, injected high levels of growth hormone in rats, which caused the thymus gland in old rats to become as large and that in young rats. This confirmed work by Israeli scientists who reverse thymus shrinkage in mice using bovine growth hormone and later had the same results in dogs. Immune activities that HGH improves increase production of T-cells/interleukin 2/lymphocytes activity, stimulate macrophages, increase maturation of neutrophils, create higher activity of natural killer cells, and increase production of red blood cells.
  • Lung function - HGH injections increase the ability to exercise, which raises the maximum oxygen uptake, increases stroke volume/cardiac output and helps improve heart-lung function. David Clemmons, chief of endocrinology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, found that 3-weeks of HGH injections in latter stages of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients raised maximum respiratory force an average of 10-12 mm and increased maximum expiratory force. Clemmons believes that HGH is a promising treatment for emphysema and other chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.
  • Osteoporosis/Increased Bone Density - HGH therapy is used to grow children’s the bones of children deficient in the HGH. Rudman learned that six months of HGH treatments increased the density of the lumbar vertebrae by 1.6% in men over 65 years of age, but there was no bone density increase of the radius bone in the arm/femur of the leg. Recently, Dr Gudmundur Johannson and other Swedish scientists studied 44 men/women 23-66 of age, who were extremely GH deficient. 2 years of HGH therapy resulted in major increases in bone density in the hip joint and the lower spine vertebrae. Studies show an increase in osteocalcin, a calcium-binding bone protein and two types of collagen, which are markers of bone formation. Researchers believe they reduced fracture risk to equal that of the normal healthy controls.
  • Sexual function – With the decline of HGH, comes a decline of male potency. HGH levels and sexual potency are at their peak through puberty and begin to decline shortly after and by age 80, 75% of men cannot sustain an erection. People who are HGH deficient because of pituitary disease have decreased libido and sexual function and according to Nottingham Health Profile after HGH replacement therapy, they have increased sexual drive and function. In a study of 202 aging adults, 75% of the men saw improved sexual potency/frequency, and 62% had longer-lasting erections. During interviews, nearly all men/women reported improved libido and sexual function.
  • Brain function -HGH elevates mood, increases energy levels, and improves slow-wave sleep.  Johannsson's team of scientists discovered that HGH changed the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the human brain, raised levels of B-endorphin called the brain's own opiate, and lowered dopamine levels associated with feelings of agitation.

Team member Bengtsson says, “This is similar to the concentrations of these neurotransmitters one sees in antidepressants.” Other research saw HGH reduce stress, improve concentration/focus, improve memory, improve cognitive build confidence/self-esteem. Dr. Jan Berend Deijem and his team of Dutch researchers found that HGH deficiency was linked with impairments in iconic memory, short-term/long term memory and perceptual-motor skills, as well as finding a correlation between low levels of IGF-1, low IQ and low education levels.

Some of the diseases for which IGF-1 may helpful for are Lou Gehrig's disease, Alzheimer's, peripheral neuropathies muscle-atrophy problems (i.e. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and allow for the use of higher doses of aggressive chemotherapy drugs that can cause peripheral neuropathies.
  • Obesity – HGH melts away fat and builds muscle and the greatest happens in deep belly fat, which is linked to an increased risk of heart attack. In every HGH study, normal aging people saw reduced body and increased lean body mass.

Thomas Hospital in London did a six-month placebo-controlled trial of 24 HGH deficient adults who were treated with HGH. They lost an average of 12.5 pounds of fat and gained an average of 12.1 pounds of lean body mass. In a double-blind study of overweight women, HGH resulted in an average loss 4.6 pounds of body fat, mostly in the abdomen and an increase of 6.6 pounds lean muscle mass.

There are many studies showing the loss of body fat. There are also implications for Type II diabetes because there is a link between central obesity and insulin resistance. Studies have shown that after six months of HGH treatment, insulin sensitivity returned to baseline.
