What Is the Optimum Rest Between Sets to Build Maximum Muscle

One of the questions most commonly asked when working out is how long one should wait between sets in order to enjoy the maximum muscle growth. There seems to be a great deal of uncertainty when it comes to knowing. There are so many factors that are tied to the growth of muscle and the rest periods.

Let’s break the rest periods into three groups

• Short rest periods – around 30 seconds
• Moderate rest periods – 60 to 90 seconds
• Long rest periods – 2 to 5 minutes

Short Rest Periods

If you want to get bigger muscles then you need to tire them through weight training. When you limit the rest period to no more than 30 seconds between your strength training exercise sets. The biggest drawback to taking a short rest period is that you will not have rested for a long enough period to be able to maintain sufficient strength. If you cannot maintain strength then the weight you will be able to lift with short rest periods may not be heavy enough for you to be able to grow your muscle past a certain point.

Moderate Rest Periods

You do not actually want to have a full recovery between your sets, because building muscles does require you to tire the muscle out. However, you must also rest long enough so that you are able to repeatedly use a weight heavy enough to stimulate muscle growth. That’s also why moderate rest periods tend to ‘hit that sweet spot’ when it comes to building muscle mass because the weight being lifted remains heavy enough to target the muscle fiber offering the greatest growth potential and the fatigue is enough so that it flips the switch that leads to muscles growth.

Long Rest Periods

The long rest period has one advantage and that is that it is nearly long enough for you to completely restore your strength and then you can use near maximum weights, which will result in you enjoying monster muscle gains and monster strength gains. There is a drawback however and that’s that often the muscle isn’t tired enough, which is a disadvantage if you want to pack on the bulk. However, with your increased strength, you will be able to lift weight that’s much heavier and you’ll access muscle fiber that you wouldn’t normally access and that can cause a different kind of bulking.

What’s the right choice – somewhere between short and long, in other words moderate. Then again don’t be scared to mix it up a bit and use all three options.

Here are a handful of tips to help you maximize your muscle development.

If you have trained for 3 to 6 months consistently – Let’s assume that you have some good exercise techniques in place that work with your big exercises (i.e. shoulder presses, bench presses, and squats) just take the time to focus on you becoming stronger over the next couple of months. Activate as much of your muscle as possible any time possible. Perform 4 to 5 sets of 4-5 reps of these big exercises using the longer rest period.

If you have been training 6 months to a year consistently – At this stage, your focus is to increase your exercise volume, which will help to build your muscles. Perform 4-5 sets of 3-4 reps using the longer rest period. Follow that by 2-4 sets of 8-12 reps with moderate rest periods for the muscle groups.

If you have trained 12-18 months consistently – By now you need a stronger stimuli so you get bigger. It’s time to focus on either muscle size or strength. Alternate your training program. Spend 4-6 weeks focusing on size development then 4 -6 weeks on strength. Perform 4 sets of big exercises on strength training with 1-3 reps and on your weight do 6-8 reps.
